Bio

When I was about 10 years old, I went to work one day with my dad. He was the Chief of OB/GYN at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco. My mother was away on a ski trip with my two older brothers, and I had pestered my dad into letting me watch him do surgery. I liked the surgery okay, but I loved the OR nurse who could wiggle his ears. It was then that my decision was finalized- I was going to be a doctor like my dad and be able to work with people who could do amazing things like ear-wiggling.

I never lost sight of my goal of becoming a doctor. For my 12th birthday I asked for a copy of Gray's Anatomy, the classical anatomy text. After completing high school, I attended UC Davis from 1986-1990 as a psychology major. I have always had a very strong interest in how and why people feel the way they do, in how we interact and experience the world around us.

I learned how to be a work-aholic in college. I studied about 100 hours per week in order to obtain admission to the Medical School of my choice, UCSF (I wanted to live close to home--there's nothing like mom's cooking).

During Medical School I learned the importance of "stopping to smell the roses." I only studied about 60 hours per week and spent a lot of time reflecting on why I was in medicine, what I could accomplish and how I could make the biggest impact on the lives of my patients.

My decision to enter the field of OB/GYN (besides just walking in my dad's footsteps -- he is the real "Dr. Golditch") has a lot to do with who women are, what they experience in life and the complex challenges they present in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

After Medical School, I completed a residency in OB/GYN at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Clara. It was there I met my wife (the best thing in my life).

I don't shy away from any problem. I am not a quitter. My patients really matter to me. I care about who my patients are as people. I have a very relaxed style with my patients (I really prefer being called Brad) but I take patient care and being the best possible doctor very seriously. I think we all have to slow down and remember that we need each other not only as doctor and patient, but as human beings.

My Medical Specialty

More details about my specialty:

Ob/Gyn is a blossoming field of medicine. We are, as a specialty, really in our 'toddler' stage of knowledge. There is a real 'art' of medicine in Ob/Gyn. As the facets of women's health care become more polished and more plentiful, it becomes clear that one cannot be an expert in all the specialty aspects of Ob/Gyn.

My specialty interests and affiliations within my field:

I have a special interest in the care of women with higher risk pregnancies, women with co-existing medical problems like hypertension or diabetes. I enjoy the challenge that complicated pregnancies offer but mostly I enjoy helping mothers to enjoy a pregnancy that may otherwise be filled with anxiety.

I also have a particular interest in urogynecology, or, more simply, helping women who have problems with urinary leakage.

Current projects or research:

I am currently helping our great exploration into computerized medicine. It is a huge project. It's a little like taking a secluded primitive tribe and placing them on the international space station. Medicine is a decade behind other industries in its use of computer technology. It is really very fun out here on the horizon.

Great health resources that I refer to:

Be careful about reading medical information on the internet; there is lots of misinformation or incomplete explanations. The gold-standard for information about OB/GYN issues is the ACOG (American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology). If you read something in a non-medical journal or book, I would be happy to discuss your concerns. The most important thing I can do for you is to give you as much quality information as I can so you can make choices that are based on sound information and are best for you.

Interests

Printmaking, especially Intaglio (etching onto a copper plate then inking the plate and placing the plate and paper through a printing press) is a labor of love; one piece can involve over 10,000 hours of work.
There was a revolution of the art form in the 1940's in the United States. The 3 fathers of American printmaking are Mauricio Lasansky, Leonard Baskin and Gabor Peterdi. I am interested in how these artists redefined visual expression in the graphic arts.

Family & Friends

People in my life:

I am a family guy. Though I enjoy times with friends, to me there is nothing better than being home with my wife and kids. They are a reminder to me every day about what matters in life.

My pets:

We have 2 cats and a dog. Though I love all the pets, I have a special place in my heart for our pooch. She is a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, a wonderful loving breed. She is, I am convinced, a reincarnated person.

Travel

An adventure I've had:

Honestly, the greatest adventure of my life is my family. My children constantly teach me, remind me and validate for me why I am in this world. (This is why I parachuted before I had kids.)
