Bio

I was born in the Pacific Northwest and spent my entire young life in the Seattle area. I attended Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington and the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.

After internship at the Swedish Hospital Medical Center in Seattle and a Research Fellowship at the University of Washington, I joined the Otolaryngology residency at the University of California at Davis in Sacramento.

After residency I was lucky enough to be awarded a prestigious fellowship in otology and neurotology with The Otology Group in Nashville, Tennessee.

I joined the Kaiser Permanente in 1995, and have been so delighted that I have practiced here ever since!

My Medical Specialty

More details about my specialty:

I specialize in diseases of the ears, nose, throat, and neck, and have a broad range of practice, including appointments in the clinic and surgery in the operating room.

I particularly like the variety in my practice. I see patients of all ages, and they have a wide variety of issues from simple to life-threatening.

It is a real privilege to be allowed to help people with something so precious and important as their health.

I have had parents tell me that putting tubes in their child's ears "changed our lives." I've had patients return to work because they were fitted with hearing aids that allowed them to communicate again.

It is so rewarding to be able to influence people's lives for the better

My specialty interests and affiliations within my field:

I am Board Certified in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.

I am specially trained as an otologic (ear) surgeon, and have a particular interest in hearing loss, tinnitus and vertigo.

I am the physician adviser to the Hearing Aid Centers in Kaiser Santa Rosa. These centers are another fantastic resource that provide top-notch care for our patients.

Current projects or research:

The best part about practicing as a Head and Neck Surgeon at Kaiser Santa Rosa is our fantastic health care team. We have the best doctors, nurses, and support staff in the country, and we provide the highest quality integrated care.

In addition to my "day job" I am also deeply involved in the Quality process here at Santa Rosa Kaiser. Not only can I make a positive impact on patients lives one-on-one, I can help to change the systems that affect us all.

Great health resources that I refer to:

An interesting story from my training:

One of the most exciting developments in my specialty is the increasing use of implantable hearing aids. The cochlear implant is a miracle for patients with complete hearing loss. The BAHA aid is useful in an increasing number of situations such as congenital hearing loss or even sensorineural hearing loss. I expect that soon there will be a middle ear implantable aid that will change the way we think of traditional hearing aids.

Interests

For me, snow skiing is close to an obsession. I'm not normally a risk taker, but I love ripping down the slopes at top speed.

Travel

An adventure I've had:

My most memorable trip was to India to visit some friends who live there. The food in Southern India was so delicious, and the colorful saris that the ladies wear were delightful. It was a fabulous trip, and I'd return at the drop of a hat!

Favorite place in the world:

I feel so lucky to live in Northern California. The old growth redwood trees are so spectacular and calming. The beach and the mountains are so amazing and invigorating.

One of my recent trips:

I'm always ready to return to Hawaii. The sun and the sand can't be beat, and it is all so accessible from where I live in California.
