Bio

I am a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist, also known as a Physiatrist. This specialty focuses on diseases of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, and concentrates on maximizing function for the individual patient. I also practice in the Occupational Medicine Department.

I was born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in a small town in Southeastern Michigan. I received my bachelor's degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and obtained my medical degree at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

I stayed in Michigan for my internship at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, Michigan and traveled to Sacramento, California for my residency training in PM&R at UC Davis Medical Center. I completed residency in June, 2006 and I joined Kaiser in September of the same year.

I love living in Northern California and having the opportunity to take advantage of the many outdoor activities available, including horseback riding and biking.

My Medical Specialty

More details about my specialty:

I am a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist, also known as a Physiatrist. When I am asked to describe PM&R, I say it is a mix of non-operative Orthopedics and Neurology. We focus on maximizing function for the individual in day to day life. I also practice in the Department of Occupational Medicine where my musculoskeletal training is greatly utilized!

When I started medical school, I thought I would become a pediatrician, but found that I enjoyed taking care of elderly patients as well. PM&R allowed me to see all age ranges with a focus on the practical aspects of daily living. I loved that this was a field dedicated to improving quality of life.

An interesting story from my training:

During medical school, I was able to travel to Italy for a one month rotation in gastroenterology. The experience allowed me to compare and contrast the many differences in our health systems. One of the most shocking discoveries was that patients were allowed to smoke in the hallways of the hospital.

I'll never forget one of the medical students amusement at my short white coat. She was surprised to learn that this was how we distinguished medical students from physicians in the hospital. Apparently she had always wondered about this when watching the medical students on the television show "ER".

Interests

At age 11, I started riding horses with my father. When I went away to college, I could no longer find the time for horseback riding, but I missed it greatly. Now that I've relocated to Santa Rosa, I've started to ride again after 18 years!

Family & Friends

People in my life:

My parents live in Highland, Michigan, a small suburb of Detroit. They are native Detroiters who met at age 14 (my father was my mother's paper boy). My father is self-employed as an architect/general contractor and my mother keeps the business running.
My older brother works in the family business. He has been with his wife for over 14 years and have two children who I adore. I travel to Michigan to see them as often as possible. My younger brother is a commercial pilot and is the captain of an Embraer 180. He and his wife just had their first baby on 6/8/07.

My pets:

My cat, Maisy, was a rescue. After she was hit by a car, the vet was unable to locate her owner so I adopted her. She initially had no use of her right front paw, but her wrist drop resolved over time and she is now very active (but clumsy).
