Bio

I was born and raised in Chicago Illinois and am an unapologetic Bears and Cubs fan. I attended Carlton College outside of Minneapolis and then attended the University of Illinois Medical School. Upon completion of my MD, the sand and surf of Southern California drew me to my residency at Los Angeles Childrens Hospital. I never went back to the snow.

I wanted to be a pediatrician since the age of 3. I have found it tremendously fulfilling and a lot of fun. I particularly like watching my patients grow up and learning what they do with their lives. In my practice I believe that working in collaboration with families to support their belief systems is the best way for my patients to stay healthy. I love children and I enjoy the opportunity to teach them and their families about health matters.

I joined Kaiser Permanente in 1990 because I was looking for a multi-specialty practice to work in. This is important to me because I can take advantage of the shared knowledge of all of the clinicians I work with instead of just working on my own. For some of the trickier diagnoses that I have made, I have found this ability to speak with MDs down the hall invaluable. Kaiser Permanente also allowed me to practice preventive medicine which is something I believe strongly in. Over the past 15 years I have had the opportunity to work at 3 different Kaiser Permanente locations including Redwood City, Santa Theresa/Gilroy and Santa Rosa. Although each location is slightly different, the general philosophy of preventive care is evident in all.

My Medical Specialty

More details about my specialty:

Teaching and watching children and families grow are the reasons that I find pediatrics such a fulfilling specialty. It is a very happy specialty. For the most part, kids get better, and they make you laugh.

My specialty interests and affiliations within my field:

While I enjoy children of any age, I have a special interest in adolescent medicine.

Great health resources that I refer to:

Batron Schmidt, "Your Child's Health"
American Academy of pediatrics web site.

An interesting story from my training:

As a resident, part of my emergency training was transporting ill children via ambulance or helicopter. Our friend the stuffed skunk never left this toddler's side. As for me, I didn't choose this as a subspecialty because I was always given the air sickness bag as soon as I entered the helicopter.

Interests

I have been playing softball since I was child and even played in college. I stopped during med school and residency and, as our children have gotten older, I have been able to reacquaint myself with one of my favorite sports. I usually play second base or shortstop. If you ever see a bandage on my hand, it is usually the result of slide into home or a hopper hitting my nail.

My favorite book or author:
Being a Pediatrician, Shel Silverstein is definitely my favorite author.

Family & Friends

People in my life:

My husband also works with Kaiser Permanente though he is not a clinician. He works at the national offices on implementation of programs for patients with chronic disease.

My children and people I care about:

My kids are the light of my life, as well as the cause of my chronic fatigue. They range in age from 13 to 4 and are all very active, with very strong and individual personalities. It always amazes me how three kids from the same gene pool and environment can be so different.

My pets:

We have many pets: an elderly Labrador, a bunny, fish, and of course we are running a guinea pig ranch. We purchased a guinea pig in October; she was in a pen with only other female guinea pigs. We now have a total of eight of them.

Travel

An adventure I've had:

During my residency I had the opportunity to work in Belize. I came to appreciate the struggles people of the Third World live with. One of my more exciting adventures occurred after traveling for three days by horseback to the back jungles of Belize to vaccinate children. On our way back, we lost our guide and night descended as we tramped through the mud in the deep jungle. We amused ourselves and kept fear at bay by singing show tunes. To this day, I believe our off-key tunes kept the jaguars at bay.

Favorite place in the world:

Hawaii; as soon as I land I feel relaxed. It truly is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and the Hawaiian culture is lovely.

I also love Germany, particularly Bavaria. My mother was born and raised there. My summers as a child were spent in Munich.

One of my recent trips:

I recently visited Montreal for my in-laws' 50th anniversary. I really enjoyed learning the French Canadian history of my husband's family and living with 6 families, all related, under one roof for two weeks.
