Bio
I am a psychologist in the Santa Rosa Department of Adult Psychiatry. I have been in clinical practice since 1976; first in Europe, and since 1983, in the United States. In 1990 I joined the Department of Psychiatry at Kaiser Santa Rosa. It was the best decision I have ever made as a clinician: it has been a privilege to work with a growing, dynamic group of dedicated professionals who are always striving to provide the best available clinical services to our members.
As a member of the adult clinical team, I provide initial assessments, individual brief psychotherapy and skill based, short-term psychotherapy groups. With my almost three decades of clinical experience, I have developed a focused, integrative treatment approach designed to help the patient accept, and more effectively deal with, the realities of their life. My approach consists of solutions oriented, cognitive behavioral techniques where appropriate, elements of eastern psychology, and a psychodynamic understanding. My treatment philosophy embraces mindfulness as an effective tool for managing our emotional responses to the sometimes difficult situations we are faced with. This includes developing an awareness and attention to the present moment from an accepting, non-judgmental stance. I see my role as helping my patients assume an active role in improving their self-care and in developing the most effective relationship with the realities of their lives.
Regarding my background, I grew up in Bohemia, (Czech Republic) and attended Charles University in Prague where I earned a PhD in Psychology in 1976. I worked as a research psychologist and later in clinical practice in Prague and in Liberec until 1982. I came to the Bay Area in 1983, and to Kaiser Santa Rosa in 1990. I speak and can provide clinical services in Czech and in Slovak.
