Pregnancy, Prenatal Education & Breastfeeding

"Healthy Beginnings"

If you’re pregnant, you probably have many questions, and are hungry for information and support to have the healthiest baby possible. In partnership with you and your medical providers, our "Healthy Beginnings" prenatal education program prepares you for the best possible labor, delivery, breastfeeding and newborn care experience. In classes, newsletters and through individual teaching, you are taught about the important medical and psychosocial events occurring during each stage of pregnancy, how to identify problems early, how to take good care of yourself, and how to take the best care possible of your new baby.

Each pregnancy and new child brings unique demands, rewards and adjustments for all involved. This time of transition can be eased and enriched by education. With more knowledge and understanding of this important time of life, you will also find more joy and satisfaction as your family grows.

Our Instructors

Prenatal education instructors have a variety of certifications, licenses, and experience. All childbirth preparation instructors are trained and certified to teach childbirth preparation information, techniques and skills. Instructors who teach breastfeeding are either certified lactation educators or consultants. Some instructors are also currently working as midwives or doulas (birth assistants). Many are registered nurses who work at Kaiser Permanente Santa Rosa. Our Maternal and Child Health Education Coordinator oversees classes and periodically updates the class content to meet current knowledge and practice.

Programs and Services

The majority of prenatal classes are one session. Childbirth preparation is offered as a five-week series (once a week), a Friday/Saturday Intensive, and an all day Saturday Intensive. Classes are for members only, and partners are highly encouraged to attend. In some cases, additional adult family members may also attend. You may enroll in these classes through the Health Education Department, your clinical health educator or medical provider. If you need specialized nutrition care your physician can refer you to an individual consultation with one our Registered Dietitians. Our Health Education Center offers a wide variety of resources on women’s health. Please stop by to pick up free pamphlets, use our computer to search for scientific articles, or to borrow or purchase books, audios, and videos.
