Bio

I began my professional career assuming that I would be a psychotherapist in private practice; I was licensed as a Clinical Social worker in 1983. I do maintain a limited psychotherapy practice, but I have become as interested in behavioral medicine.

I began teaching stress management classes for Kaiser in 1991. In 1995 I assisted in designing the Mind Body Medicine course and taught that course for about 6 years. I began working in the chronic pain department in 1999. My role here is as a care manager and instructor in the chronic pain management classes.

I appreciate being able to work with an exceptional team and find the class experience very rewarding. The core principals and practices that we teach here are valuable beyond managing chronic pain and other chronic conditions. I personally benefit from practicing what I teach. Teaching keeps the concepts fresh for me as well.

As my undergraduate major was English literature, I spend a lot of my time reading: mostly fiction, especially short fiction. I also try to keep up with developments in behavioral medicine. I've been meditating for 23 years and try to do a retreat about every other year.

I've been married 28 years; my wife & I live in Sonoma.
