Bio

I came to Kaiser Santa Rosa after 20 years in private practice in Santa Rosa because of my interest in system quality and Kaiser Permanente's ability through its integrated system to deliver proactive health care in a more systematic way than is possible in traditional practice.

More information...

Formally, my background is that I majored in English literature at Yale, and received my MD from Harvard. I served as an intern, resident, and Chief Resident in Internal Medicine at UCLA, followed by an Infectious Disease Fellowship, also at UCLA. I have continued to teach residents throughout my career and thus am currently a Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSF.

I then became increasingly involved in building "Health Care" programs as director of Quality Improvement at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, and received additional training to become a Certified Physician Executive. I now serve as Medical Director of Chronic Conditions Management at Kaiser Santa Rosa. This program seeks to identify patients at risk of serious medical illness, and optimize their therapy to prevent complications or premature death.

As a practicing physician, I make every attempt to provide expert level advice and courteous service to patients.

My Medical Specialty

More details about my specialty:

Personally, as a hospital physician, I attempt to bring my years of experience in hospital care to patients in an efficient and effective manner, and in my office practice, share with patients both my personal expertise and Kaiser Permanente's many programs and systems to support each member optimally in achieving excellent health.

My specialty interests and affiliations within my field:

As I practiced for many years as an infectious disease consultant, I became increasing impressed with how current medical information and technology could be utilized to prevent the conditions of the critically ill patients I routinely saw. Over the past 15 years, I have become increasingly involved in building programs that support improved health, initially as director of Quality Improvement at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, and received additional training to become a Certified Physician Executive. I now serve as Medical Director of Chronic Conditions Management at Kaiser Permanente Santa Rosa.

This program seeks to identify patients at risk of serious medical illness, and optimize their therapy to prevent complications or premature death. Kaiser Permanente's integrated health care system makes it possible to determine which members are at risk for common preventable conditions, and take action to correct fundamental problems (high cholesterol, high blood sugar, for example) before patients become ill. This process might be compared to the preventive maintenance we do on our cars to maintain optimal performance. But with the detailed information on each member within our system, the process can be tailored to each individual member's needs.

Current projects or research:

Our current emphasis within Chronic Conditions Management is to harness Kaiser Permanente's burgeoning information technology capabilities to connect all our members having chronic health conditions with optimal life style modifications and therapy thus supporting all physicians' efforts in Family Medicine to assist their patients to live healthily and long.

Great health resources that I refer to:

If you have specific questions about a condition that you or a family member has, an excellent place to research it is on the Kaiser Permanente website, where information is responsible and up to date.

Interests

I have been fortunate to live in South Africa for a year as a youth, and travel professionally throughout the world. I have come to appreciate how much each culture brings both a unique vision of life, and a common set of human needs and aspirations that is difficult to sense without becoming a "foreigner" oneself and immersing oneself in other cultures.

Fortunately, it seems that for my tastes, Sonoma County is about as good as it gets...

Travel

An adventure I've had:

It is hard to select a specific time or adventure, but I believe the adventure I reflect upon most is flying to Alaska, stopping in several towns in the Yukon, and coming to comprehend Alaska's people and the vastness of its wilderness and scenery.

Favorite place in the world:

In balance, Sonoma County is my favorite place in terms of blending climate, scenery and people. It has the beauty of seasons without harshness; it has the sophistication of an urban place, but has access to wilderness.
