Bio

I am a Head and Neck Surgeon, otherwise known as an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) physician or Otolaryngologist.

I was born and raised in New Jersey, and moved to Oklahoma in my teenage years. I attended the University of Oklahoma for my undergraduate education. I then headed to St. Louis, Missouri for my medical education. I attended Washington University School of Medicine, where I got both my Medical Degree as well as a Masters Degree in Biomedical Sciences. I stayed on at Washington University for my residency training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. In my final year there, I was chosen to be the Administrative Chief Resident for the department.

I really enjoy living and working in Santa Rosa. I can't think of a better place to be. I joined Kaiser Santa Rosa in August 2007. The Department of Head and Neck Surgery has an excellent team of physicians and support staff, and our colleagues in Speech Therapy and Audiology are also top-rate. All of us take a team approach to taking care of patients. I feel privileged to work in such a fine department, and I feel privileged to take care of patients at Kaiser Santa Rosa.

My Medical Specialty

More details about my specialty:

I am a Head and Neck Surgeon, otherwise known as an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) physician or Otolaryngologist. I chose my specialty for many reasons. I have a hearing loss in one ear, so my initial interest was in ears and hearing. When I went to medical school, I was fascinated by the incredibly complex anatomy of the head and neck. The field is so broad and wide-ranging... on any given day, I might see anyone from a newborn to a spry 90-year-old. The great balance of clinic-based practice and surgery is very rewarding. Since so many of the reasons people go to a physician have something to do with the head and neck, I have the unique opportunity to function as a primary care provider AND a highly specialized surgeon.

My specialty interests and affiliations within my field:

* American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
* American Medical Association

Current projects or research:

During my medical school and residency training, my primary research interest was in noise-induced hearing loss.

Interests

Golf is the biggest passion in my life. I have always loved the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of a golf course. You never realize how hard it is to play the game until you try it. I think that's why I like it so much - it's a challenge. The only drawback is that it's so expensive to play. I'm not that good, but I really do enjoy it.

My favorite book or author:
Tom Clancy - I've read all of his books

Great movie:
Ocean's Eleven

Family & Friends

People in my life:

My significant other is an operating room nurse. I met her during my residency in St. Louis.

An interesting story about my family or friends:

I come from a family of physicians. My father, mother, and sister are all doctors. I am the first surgeon in the family, however.

My parents came to this country with nothing, and now they are very well respected physicians. They gave me everything I needed to get where I am today.

Travel

An adventure I've had:

The most fun I've had in a long time was the winter of 2006, when I went skiing for the first time in Beaver Creek, Colorado. Up until then, I was too chicken to try skiing, but when I tried it, I fell in love with it. I am going to try out Tahoe as soon as I get a chance.

Favorite place in the world:

The entire Bay Area. I can't think of a better place to be. The weather is amazing and there is so much to do.

One of my recent trips:

When I moved to California from Missouri, we took a week-long road trip, which was a lot of fun. We started in St. Louis and headed to the Grand Canyon, with stops in Oklahoma and New Mexico. Next, we headed up to Vegas for a couple of days. On to LA after that, and then up the beautiful Pacific Coast Highway to Monterey. While in Monterey, I had the best dessert I have ever tasted -- deep fried cheesecake at the Old Fisherman's Grotto. The next day, I arrived in Santa Rosa!
