Why I Chose Nursing
I knew in kindergarten that I wanted to be a nurse. I took that Medical bag and grabbed out the shot and thermometer and always left the stethoscope. I think I knew then that I wanted to be a part of helping someone who was ill, but I don't think I understood what the stethoscope was for back then so I left it alone. What do I love about it? What isn't there to love! I like the patients and their families the most, I have never met a patient or family that I didn't learn something from or grow from as a professional and as a human being. Each day it's a different shift. It can often be the same family or patient but it's still got a different spin on it. I could work with the family and physician's trying to save a loved one and then the next day be at their side as the patient, physician and family move on to comfort care. I learned early on that life is what the patient chooses, not the physician, not me as a nurse and not as their families may wish for.
An Interesting Part of My Job
Quality of life by the patients set standards and respecting patient's wishes are two areas's that I find interesting and often read about outside of the work environment. How can I (as a nurse) support the process better?
Biography
I joined Kaiser in April of 1994, as a mom of a 4 month old, in the eye department as an ophthalmology assistant. I also helped in other departments around the campus where ever they needed me as a medical assistant and then unit assistant. Any shifts that would allow for me to put myself through school seemed to be where I went. As a result I certainly know many staff. When I graduated with my RN degree I sincerely felt grateful to all my friends here at Kaiser who walked me through to my dream and I definitely continue to encourage the many staff that are currently pursuing their dreams of becoming an RN and working at Kaiser Santa Rosa. Now that 4 month old is 13 years old and I am happily working in my chosen field of Critical Care Nursing.
