Bio

I grew up in the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California. When I wasn't playing football or basketball, I worked on farms.

I completed college, medical school and residency in Southern California . In 1990, I moved to San Jose and worked for Kaiser Permanente until 1996. During the next 3 years I worked at a large private hospital as well as the trauma center in San Jose. In 1999, I moved to South Lake Tahoe, then to Santa Rosa in 2002.

I have had the opportunity to work in several hospitals in different cities and I chose Kaiser Santa Rosa for many reasons. The quality of the physicians that I work with both in the ER and in the hospital is second to none.

My Medical Specialty

More details about my specialty:

Many of you have watched the television show "ER." While only a dramatization, it is a good representation of the emergency rooms where my colleagues and I trained. Although occasionally our emergency department at Kaiser Santa Rosa may resemble the one on TV, it is usually less chaotic and less noisy. Nobody wants to wait when they are sick or injured and because of our staffing and efficiency, our wait time is less than most other major hospital ER's.

Emergency medicine is a recognized medical specialty just like pediatrics and orthopedic surgery. There are rigorous standards to meet to become board certified in emergency medicine, which is a mark of excellence. My colleagues and I are all board certified in emergency medicine.

As an emergency medicine specialist, I work only in the emergency department. I don't have a panel or see patients in the office.

Along with my responsibilities of caring for patients in the emergency department, I serve as chief of the hospital legal affairs and the emergency department quality review process.

Travel

An adventure I've had:

I have had the opportunity to travel to many places but the most unique trip I've had was spending three months bicycling the coast of Australia, then heading home via remote islands in the South Pacific.

Favorite place in the world:

Most of my travels have been to tropical areas such as the South Pacific and Caribbean. Frequently we rent a sailboat for several weeks to explore the islands. Sailing the coast of Turkey with my wife and a group of friends was an unforgettable experience. My favorite place is the Seychelles Islands.

One of my recent trips:

I recently returned from the island of Guadalupe. The diving and windsurfing were excellent but you need to speak French well to fully enjoy this island! I was amazed at the turnout for weekend bicycle races around the island with both the temperature and humidity over 90%.
