Bio

Born in Saint Louis, Missouri during my father's third year of Medical School, I was destined to become a physician. As a child, my family moved to the North Bay Area. It was in high school that I knew I wished to be a doctor. Training led me up and down the West Coast, ultimately to settle again, at home, in the North Bay at Kaiser Santa Rosa.

Gastroenterology is an interesting field. I gained an appreciation for this specialty during my Internal Medicine Residency at Oregon Health Sciences University, watching the GI Fellows do endoscopic procedures. Endoscopic procedures add breadth to my practice. I see patients in the clinic and the hospital and do procedures in the clinic and in the hospital. I am able to listen to patient's symptoms and then directly look (with a scope) for the cause.

Kaiser medical practice affords me the ability to see patients and perform the tests and examinations I believe are necessary without health insurance red tape. I have been helping my patients, one gut at a time, in Santa Rosa since 1998. If your intestines are ailing, a gastrointestinal evaluation is worth your availing.

My Medical Specialty

More details about my specialty:

Gastroenterology practice involves direct patient care with endoscopic procedural interventions in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The practice is diverse and rewarding. From evaluating esophageal reflux, to removing gallstones from the bile duct, and taking polyps out of the colon, a day in the life of the gastroenterologist is always interesting.

My specialty interests and affiliations within my field:

Gastroenterology involves care of intestinal (esophageal, stomach, small intestine and colon), liver, gallbladder and pancreatic conditions. I enjoy practicing in all these areas.

Current projects or research:

Providing Gastrointestinal care for all my patients.

Great health resources that I refer to:

I review my peer reviewed journals, standard text books and use on-line resources to keep current. Annually attending the Digestive Disease Week (DDW), sponsored by the American Gastroenterologic Association (AGA), American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), American Association for the Study of Liver Disease (AASLD) and Surgical Society of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT) also keeps me current.

An interesting story from my training:

Training at Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center provides its GI Fellows with no lack of procedural experience. One call night I scoped six variceal bleeders and the next day lectured for GI Grand Rounds.

Interests

Through the Redwood Empire Tall Club, I socialize with other tall people. Resources for the vertically overachieved to more comfortably live in this small world can be found through this club. I myself, at 6'6", found a 6'3" wife.

Women 5'10" and men 6'2", or taller, are eligible to join this nonprofit social club. Tall clubs are throughout the country, as members of Tall Clubs International.

Family & Friends

People in my life:

Married five years now, I met my wife through the Redwood Empire Tall Club. We are twin flame soulmates. With my wife at 6'3" and myself at 6'6"; we stand tall to the challenges of life and family to be.

My children and people I care about:

Children are in our future.

An interesting story about my family or friends:

I married into an annual family tradition called Buck's Lake. For years my wife's family clan has taken a vacation at this PG&E lake near Quincy, CA. I now annually do so as well. Watersports including waterskiing, wakeboarding, jetskiing, tubing, boating, and lounging at the beach are the agenda. There is always a theme dress night; one year it was the color orange.

My pets:

A shorthaired, yellow labrador retriever is also in our future.

Travel

An adventure I've had:

My wife and I give surprise birthday gifts to each other on our birthdays. One year she gave me a glider lesson. After being towed up to seven thousand feet by the tow plane, I was released to glide back to the ground over Hollister, CA.

Gliding was definitely superior to the hot air ballooning I have done twice before. My wife and I were filmed and part of a nationally televised Inside Edition expose on balloon safety during one of our rides. We came back safely.

Favorite place in the world:

On the Mendocino coast in Little River, CA is the Heritage House Inn. There, a gazebo sits on a rocky peninsula overlooking the Pacific Ocean; I proposed to my wife in that gazebo.

One of my recent trips:

On our trip to New Zealand and Australia, my wife and I had the opportunity to swim with dolphins in the Antarctic Ocean and snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. Respectful preservation of ecosystems, like the reef, is necessary for all of us to thrive.
