Bio

I am thrilled to join Kaiser Permanente Santa Rosa as a Psychiatrist on the Adult Psychiatry Team. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to settle in California and a professional goal to become a member of a dynamic multi-specialty medical organization. And, in my opinion, it could not have been scripted better than joining Kaiser Permanente in Sonoma County.

After growing up in Chicago and South Florida, my education took me across the country from Atlanta to Denver, Colorado, and most recently to Seattle where I completed my training at the University of Washington. And I ventured across the Pacific to participate in a clinical rotation near Sydney, Australia. My professional interests are equally diverse. I started my medical career as an Obstetrician & Gynecologist but found my true passion in the field of Psychiatry. My interests are in all areas of Adult Psychiatry, and I also have a unique interest in Reproductive Psychiatry which allows me to combine my years of experience in two medical specialties.

I value the opportunity as a Psychiatrist to get to know each of my patients as individuals and work with them to address their unique concerns. And I appreciate the opportunity to work collaboratively with other physicians and staff within the Kaiser Permanente system as I feel it provides our patients superb, comprehensive medical care.

I invite you to learn more about me through my Physician Homepage. And I look forward to working with you.

My Medical Specialty

More details about my specialty:

My inspiration to become a physician was my childhood doctor, a warm and fascinating internist from NYC who made housecalls. I began my own medical career as an Obstetrician & Gynecologist and was a faculty member in this specialty at the University of Colorado. But my interests evolved as I learned more about myself and the aspects of medicine I desired to focus upon in my practice. And I discovered that my professional interests were best satisfied in Psychiatry. I value the patient-doctor relationship, not only the trust that a patient places in their physician but also the tremendous responsibility of the physician to provide competent and compassionate care. In my practice, I strive to earn my patient's trust during every clinical interaction.

My specialty interests and affiliations within my field:

My professional interests include all aspects of Adult Psychiatry. I am fortunate to work in a supportive environment with many superb therapists who provide an array of counseling modalities. This allows me to focus upon clarifying my patient's diagnosis and addressing their concerns through medication management and behavioral modification.

Current projects or research:

I am interested in the emerging field of Reproductive Psychiatry. This includes Psychiatric Disorders During Pregnancy, Postpartum Psychiatric Disorders, Breastfeeding and Psychiatric Medications, PMS/PMDD, Menopausal Symptoms, and Fertility and Mental Health.

Interests

My father's parents were Sicilian, and I have always valued my Italian heritage. Recently, my family traveled to Italy where we reunited with distant relatives. This was an incredible experience, and it inspired me to further develop my knowledge of this enchanting land and people. I hope to learn to speak Italian...and perhaps pick up some culinary skills along the way!

Family & Friends

People in my life:

I am married to an incredible woman who has supported me throughout my career as she developed her own in non-profit marketing and fundraising.

My children and people I care about:

We recently had our first child, a beautiful and healthy baby girl. It never ceases to amaze me how something so small can be so life transformative!

My pets:

Bridget the Tuxedo Cat and Joey the Rat Terrier have been a constant source of entertainment. And we recently adopted a dappled-colored dachshund, Augie, to add to the mix and to be Joey's new companion.

Travel

An adventure I've had:

Traveling to Italy with my wife, parents, siblings, niece, and nephews was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to share in the splendor of my grandparents' homeland and explore it's unique culture and history. We spent much of our time in the countryside of Tuscany. But the highlight of the trip was returning to my grandparents' birthplaces in Sicily and meeting our distant relatives who still reside there.

Favorite place in the world:

I had the opportunity to study in Australia during my medical residency, and I returned there with my wife a few years later for our honeymoon. It is both exotic and familiar. It combines English custom with California's sun-splashed coastline and laid-back surfer culture. From Sydney's cosmopolitan sophistication to Queensland's tropical coastlines and Great Barrier Reefs to the desolate and primitive but magical and alluring Outback. There is no other place on Earth that quite compares to the Land Down Under.

One of my recent trips:

I've had the opportunity to live in both Colorado and the Pacific Northwest before settling in Northern California. I became a skiier while residing in Denver, and my wife and I enjoyed our annual ski trip to Whistler, BC, after moving to Seattle. We are thrilled with the beautiful weather in our new home in Santa Rosa, but we're looking forward to returning to the Pacific Northwest to attend the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, BC, in 2010!
